Honors & Awards

Art Fields - 2026 (6th year in a row)

ArtFields started in 2013 with a simple goal: honor the artists of the Southeast with a week’s worth of celebration and competition in the heart of a traditional Southern small town. The competition and exhibition offers over $145,000 in cash prizes. The winners of two People’s Choice Awards are determined by the votes of people visiting ArtFields; a panel of art professionals selects all the other awards, including the $50,000 Grand Prize and $25,000 Second Place award.
Up to 400 works of art will be on display in locally-owned venues, from renovated 1920s warehouses and professional art spaces such as Jones-Carter Gallery and TRAX Visual Art Center to the library, the history museum, the Ronald E. McNair Life History Center, restaurants, boutiques and other shops. During ArtFields, what was once one of South Carolina’s most prosperous agricultural communities becomes a living art gallery as we recognize, celebrate and share the artistic talent of the Southeast.

The Heritage of Love
Well Loved (Jo) – 20x16 Charcoal on wood panel
Loved Well (Mary) – 16x20 Charcoal on wood panel
Printed organza

When I first met Miss Mary, she radiated beauty. Wheelchair bound and lost in her own world, she would soon become the subject for my charcoal drawing. Her daughter Jo let me come to their home for a photography session, and Mary was lovingly dressed and coiffed.  In moments of lucidity, Mary sang hymns and prayed as our photo session progressed. I gifted the promised drawing to Jo. Subsequently, I witnessed the commitment of love which began with Mary and ended with Jo as care-giver roles reversed. These charcoals are a tribute to Mary and Jo, with the printed organza representing the spirit of love that transcends physical bounds.

"What We See Now Is Not All"
41x30 Watercolor
Remember the anticipation and then arrival of the solar eclipse of 2017?
My parents, son and I hung around the back deck waiting for the sky to
darken. As an evening sky dropped on us, we used special glasses to see
the crescent sun as the moon passed in front of her. We used a colander
to see multiple tiny crescents and the tree shadows held dancing
crescents on the ground. Dad was 87 and peered up with amazement. He
saw what we all saw that day, something spectacular. Dad has since left
this earth. Each day since his passing I think of him and what he is seeing
now. Is it streets of gold, reunited loved ones or something far more
indescribable? I have hope it’s beyond our imaginings.
